Interactive media veteran Robert Ferrari has launched a new startup and teamed up with actor Seth Green and Matthew Senreich, creators of Stoopid Monkey, to create a new iPhone mobile app.

The former vice president of business development at Turbine Inc. (now WB Games), creators of massive multiplayer online role-playing game Dungeons & Dragons, came up with the idea to launch a new startup while at Sanrio Digital in Boston. Ferrari relied on his knowledge in gaming to tap into the several brands he’s worked with, and used his own funds to launch Bare Tree Media.

“When I started this company last year, I felt that it was a great way to connect fans with different brands,” Ferrari said of the new Paparazzi app. “We have a whole portfolio of different brands and connect those brands to consumers through our mobile apps and branded virtual goods within virtual worlds.”

Bare Tree Media wasn’t going to reach out to just any brand, according to Ferrari.

“When I thought of teaming up with Seth Green and Matthew Senreich, they were just getting ready to launch Stoopid Monkey LLC (now a company with more than 20 videos using stop-action animation) on YouTube,” Ferrari said. “I had the opportunity of knowing Seth and Matt years ago, when we were exploring the online world and pulling in different brands and different properties. They were working on ideas on how to connect people online through entertainment.”

After conversations with the creators, Ferrari decided to launch a mobile app to allow fans of the show or mobile users to take the Stoopid Monkey characters with them. Users download the app and insert the different character images into their photos.

“You can be at a Red Sox game, take a photo and insert the character in the seat on the side of you,” Ferrari said. The app is available today on iOs and will be available on Android this summer. Ferrari and the Stoopid Monkey team have a product roadmap and a game that is under development under the Stoopid Monkey name, according to the company.

Under its partnerships, Bare Tree licenses the brand so that it is able to create interactive entertainment based on the brand’s properties. The company pays a royalty back to the owners.

Bare Tree Media didn’t stop at the Stoopid Monkey brand. Ferrari is also working with Hallmark’s Hoops and Sanrio’s Hello Kitty on other projects, including Weeworld, a Boston-based leader in the virtual world space. Users that enter WeeWorld can purchase Hoops and Yo-Yo branded items, such as an animations or T-shirts.

The startup has less than five employees and it was “very much under the radar” until recently. Ferrari left Sanrio to start the business. The startup was initially self-funded, but the team is looking for funding from angel and venture capital investors. Bare Tree’s office is located at the MassChallenge accelerator, and it just completed its application for MassChallenge’s annual startup competition.
